Making the Distinction between Nation, State and Country: Examining the Differences between Official Goals, Stakeholder Opinions and Popular Youth Perception in Hong Kong’s National Education Policy

The proposed research aims at reviewing the current policy on national education in Hong Kong. It aims at assessing the effectiveness of this policy by studying the discrepancies between the official goals and the stakeholders’ opinions (i.e., those of the students and teachers and the popular perceptions of such), and to explore the reasons behind such discrepancies, especially by analyzing them from the different perspectives of the “state” (referring to the political entity that owns sovereignty over a population and region), the “nation” (referring to a people sharing a common history, culture and language) and the “country” (referring to a geographical region) – concepts often confused by Hong Kong policy makers, educators and students.
