Privatisations in Education: Exploratory Cases in Australia, Greece and Hong Kong

This is an exploratory study to develop a future proposal for a GRF grant bid. Drawing on the PI’s and Co-I’ previous and current research on education privatisations in their respective countries and territories, this study aims to firstly ascertain the ideas and structural conditions that enable privatisations of various kinds in schooling in Australia, Greece and Hong Kong. Conceptual work will also be done to develop a heuristic typology of privatisations. Case studies of privatisation of education in each location will also illuminate the specific nature of these developments in each context, help develop the typology and also facilitate cross-case comparisons. The three distinctive contexts will enable consideration of both global and path dependent elements in these privatisations. The research also aims to explore the impacts of the cases of privatisation on schooling, including on school curriculum, what knowledge is most valued, teachers and their work, and on the governance of schools and school systems.
