Learning for and with Uncertainty: Free Learning in an IB School in Hong Hong as a Model for Secondary and Tertiary Education

“The Department of International Education and Lifelong Learning at the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has won the International Baccalaureate Jeff Thompson Award to conduct a research project in collaboration with International College of Hong Kong (ICHK), an International Baccalaureate School in Hong Kong. ICHK started offering certain courses using an innovative curriculum delivery approach, called Free Learning, in August 2015 and it has performed well on the IBDP since. An initial round of observations and surveys indicated that it had been received positively, and that the learning process embraces the IB Learner Profile more strongly. A self-determined ICT-based model such as Free Learning has not yet been utilised widely in other IB schools and programmes. . Using Free Learning at ICHK as a basis for an adaptation and pilot in an IB certified teacher training programme at the Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) will provide recommendations for a successful approach at tertiary level. The project is divided into three stages, adopting a layered case study design. A preliminary stage of small-scale analysis has already been completed, identifying key features of the ICHK Free Learning approach, including institutional aspects as well as practical requirements. This foundation serves as a basis for (i) two case studies investigating the enactment of Free Learning on IB courses at ICHK and EdUHK respectively, (ii) identification of enabling and inhibiting factors, and therefore reflection on the applicability of the approach in other settings, and (iii) developing a framework for wider adoption of Free Learning on IB courses, and guidelines for successful enactment.”
