Phonological Changes in Code-mixing and Foreign Accent - A Comparative Study

The purpose of this study attempts to draw a link between code-mixing and foreign accent by analyzing the phonological features of the English words used in code-mixing from the perspectives of Cantonese, Mandarins and English. More specifically, the current research analyzes a reading passage and oral corpus data composed of one hour recorded radio talk show programs as well as 3 hours of naturally occuring conversations. The following features will be focused (a) contrastive analysis of sound difference and distribution (b) phonological constraints e.g. phonotactics and (c) adaptation strategies.
